【Awards and Commendations】Rui LI, Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, D3, received “Best Student Presentation Award” at the AESJ 2023 Spring Meeting

Rui LI, Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, School of Engineering, D3, received “Best Student Presentation Award” at the AESJ 2023 Spring Meeting

〈Name of award and short explanation about the award〉

Best Student Presentation Award

It was awarded for excellent student presentations at the AESJ Spring and Autumn Meetings.

〈About awarded research〉

Numerical simulations for large-scale gas-solid-liquid (GSL) flow systems are not feasible due to the high computational requirements and the inflexibility of setting the resolution for fluid flow. In the present research, an innovative algorithm was developed by combining the coarse-grained DEM, the refined grid model and the locally averaged DEM-VOF method and the developed algorithm was incorporated into the in-house code FELMI. The developed algorithm was validated through tests and was found to be accurate, flexible and efficient. Macroscopic features of the GSL flow systems were successfully reproduced by the algorithm with an acceptable error margin. Regarding the efficiency, needed computing time was significantly reduced. The developed algorithm had a broad application prospect, not only in nuclear engineering, but also in other engineering fields, such as the chemical engineering and pharmaceutical engineering.

〈Your impression & future plan〉

This award is an honor for me. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the co-authors, Prof. Sakai and Dr. Yamada, for their unconditional support and full help. Also, I want to say thank you to my lab members, especially Dr. Duan, for giving me so many important comments during rehearsals. With their help, the presentation was much improved. For future, I will make my best effort to continue my research about the numerical simulation.
