【Awards and Commendations】Wei SHI, D3, Okamoto Lab., Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, received “WM2023 Conference Superior Paper Award”

〈Name of award and short explanation about the award〉

Superior Paper

Waste Management Symposia 2023, Phoenix, USA, establishes the “Superior Paper” recognition with the objective to recognize researchers for distinguished contributions to the advancement of radioactive waste and radioactive material management.

〈About awarded research〉

Clarifying hot spots of radioactive sources inside reactor building rooms based on monitoring air dose rates is one of the most essential steps in decommissioning of nuclear power plants. In order to successfully perform the inverse estimations on source distributions, a scheme combining machine learning method, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and Monte Carlo simulation method, such as Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Systems (PHITS) is suggested. We confirm high reconstruction performance in successfully predicting radioactive source distributions. In conclusion, proposed scheme is a useful way to explore radioactive hot spots toward the future decommissioning of nuclear power plants.

〈Your impression & future plan〉

I am very pleased and honored to win this award. I appreciate all the co-authors for their effort on this study. Especially, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors Prof. Okamoto and Prof. Machida, who gave me a great support and encouragement on my research. I will continue my research on the reconstruction of source distribution and radioactive monitoring with great passion.
