【Awards and Commendations】Shou Li (Project Researcher), Sakai Labo, received “Best Presentation Award” at the 7th ICCCI conference.

〈About awarded research〉

The discrete element method has been extensively used to analyze the process and optimize the device design/operational conditions in the bulk material handling systems and equipment. In the DEM simulations, the bulk behavior of granular materials depends on the contact law among particles. Hence, an accurate set of parameter values relevant to the physical properties of granular materials becomes necessary. However, due to the complexity of granular materials, obtaining the appropriate parameter values at both microscopic and bulk levels is technically quite challenging. Aimed at tackling this issue, in this study, we propose a reduced-order modeling (ROM) technique for the identification of DEM parameters. The ROM is shown to not only capture the inherent structures in the parameter space, but also accurately predict the bulk distribution. Finally, by combining the ROMs with DEM simulation, the parameter values can be effectively calibrated via a multi-dimensional optimization process. This model would significantly contribute to the evolution of methodology in the identification/calibration of input parameters for bulk materials.

It is my great honor to win this award. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to every member in my lab, especially Dr. Guangtao Duan and Prof. Mikio Sakai. For future, I will make my best effort to continue my research about the numerical simulation.
