【Awards and Commendations】CASTRO Michael, Sakai lab, Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, (D1)

On 3/14/2025, CASTRO Michael, Sakai lab, Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, (D1), received the “The CSED Student Presentation Award” at the Atomic Energy Society of Japan 2025 Annual Meeting.

This award is given to young researchers who delivered outstanding presentations at the Atomic Energy Society of Japan 2025 Annual Meeting under the Computational Science and Engineering Division.

〈About awarded research〉

Title: Reduced-order Modeling of Heat Transfer in Gas–Solid Flows with Deep Learning

Abstract: Reduced-order models (ROM) of granular flow systems can be used to create digital twins of equipment that contain such systems. In this work, we proposed ROMs for gas-solid flows with heat transfer in a fluidized bed. The ROM was created via Lanczos-based proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and long-short term memory (LSTM) neural networks. Time forecasting and parametric modeling of temperatures can be achieved much faster than a full-order model.

I am extremely honored to have received “The CSED Student Presentation Award”. I am also deeply thankful to the members of Sakai Laboratory, especially Professor Mikio SAKAI, Project Assistant Professor Shuo LI, Mr. Toshiki IMATANI (D3), and Mr. Kai-en YANG (D3) for their guidance and contribution to this research and this accomplishment. I plan on developing my research further by exploring new and innovative methods for creating digital twins for granular flow processes.
