Title: Oxidation behavior of Cr-based binary alloys at high temperatures
Abstract: In light of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, research into accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) has been active, and among various proposals, Cr-coated Zr alloys are expected to be the most promising candidate. In this study, we aim to develop this further and improve performance by alloying with Cr. Cr-Fe, Cr-Al, and other alloys were produced by vacuum arc melting, and their high-temperature oxidation behavior was investigated. Surface observation of the surface oxide and measurement of residual stress were performed. The thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the performance improvement, especially under high-temperature air oxidation conditions at 1000-1200°C. This study confirmed the superiority of using Cr alloys as coating materials.
